Any advice on how to loosen up a 110? I picked an older 2 dot (think that's the right terminology, one dot on either side of the "110" on the blade) and it is really hard to open.
From closed to say 30 degrees it is fine, then it gets hard. I've used WD-40 and blown it clear with a compressor but it really isn't much better. Am I going to have to remove the scales? If so, how is that done?
Thanks in advance,
Russ

let it soak in liquid dish soap and hot water for awhile, then clean it out with a air hose, then submerse the whole knife in some mineral oil, take out completely wipe dry and work the blade open/closed a bunch, you should have a slick blade then.

All good advice......and if you feel the need to blast a knife with an aerosol spray, I'd stick to blasting it with Rem-Oil.

That knife could have been stiff because of old WD-40 in the working parts.

Or not......it's just a possibility.

Mileage appears to vary with WD-40.

The way I do it is to first put a lot of dish washing liquid in the open knife. Then use a brush to get it all over the back spring and in the pivot area. Then work the knife open and closed with the dish washing liquid acting as the lube. Then I hold the knife in a steam of hot water and open and close it Then hold the back spring down and let the water go thru the opening where the pivot is. Then dry the knife off good and use some compressed air to get the rest of the water out. Use your favorite lube and that should take care of it.

I'm taking notes on the forensic procedures of the cognizanti. Good information.

I have a tendency to get rough with reluctant knives so I try to put at least one layer of painter's tape, the blue stuff, over the cutting edge before I start working with the knife. Just in case you slip your finger forcefully onto the cutting edge, say when running a q-tip or a rag thru the handle.

I'd sure like to see pics of your new acquisition. THX

Good suggestions here.

I have this thing about opening my 110's (and closing) one handed. So when I come across one that is ornery, I just saturate the blade pivot with oil, doesn't really matter what kind, and work the blade back and forth till it frees up some.

Could take a while, but it will get there. Being a tad lazy and not wanting to have to wash the sink after doing the dish washing liquid thing, I have a can of spray lysol and a roll pf paper towels sitting here handy. Works just fine to get excess oil out.

There is a can of Hoppes #9 and a can of 3 in one sitting here as well.

My favorite oil to use after giving one a good cleaning is sewing machine oil. I figure thats probably some of the best, donno, works for me.

And Russ, don't go jacking with the scales, They won't come off in one piece. Specially the old ones that were glued on.

ps...doesn't matter what flavor spray lysol. And as a side note, spray lysol will remove most ink (ball point), in addition to some spilled food coloring, scuff marks, other stuff. Your grandbaby scribbeled on the corian with ballpoint? Go ahead and try it. Just don't go using one of those green scratch pads.

I can just visualize you all scribbling ink on something and taking the lysol to it... :)

Awesome info! Thanks to all.
Pack Rat, the wanting it to open one-handed is exactly where I am heading with this. My brother had a 110 when i was 7 or 8 (we lived about 8 miles from the El Cajon factory, and a friend of his up the street worked there for a time), I would 'borrow' it to go on hikes and LOVED being able to snatch it from the sheath and flick the blade open.
Working on this guy and his brothers as we speak. I'll post some pics of my 110 family once they are presentable.
Best,
Russ

Russ, There is a difference in "flicking" one open and pinching the blade between thumb and fingers and doing a dropping motion to pop the blade to lock.

Buck made changes to the 110 early on to get around Cali laws about gravity knives.

You may know this and going for the pinch drop method.

Just sayin,,,in case you really are trying to make it a flicker.

There is more to the gravity 110 thing. Maybe someone with full detail will pop in, but you get the idea.
