Stiff Spyderco problem

Hey all,
I got my first spyderco (g-10 CAT) a few days ago and seem to have a little problem with it. The darn thing is VERY stiff to open and I can't really flick it open whatsoever. I think the problem is a very stiff liner lock and there is also this tiny metal knob on the liner that catches the blade. Is this normal for a spyderco? I know my SOGs and Benchmades have all been butter smooth opening right out of the box. I assume that the spyderco cat needs a break in period but I've literally opened and closed it probably a thousand times now while keeping it freshly oiled but it doesn't seem to be getting any better. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Adjust the pivot.

This.....and maybe some Tuf-glide.

I just got a brand new Military that was a little more stiff than usual and, while the action wasn't as stiff as you describe, I used some Tuf-glide and adjusted the pivot.....this took care of my problem and the Millie is as smooth as glass now.

Pivot usually works for me. Another thing I have tried is MilTec or similar if still tight.

In my experience, all spydercos come stiff(compared to how i like them). This may sound idiosyncratic but i've found that at least one oil i've used has made my knife stiffer. I used some buck honig oil i had for sharpening to lube my mini grip and after about 10 minutes of opening and closing it it was far stiffer than it started. so play around with different oils and try cleaning it well (soak it in a solvent capable of removing oil if you have it or just some hot water with dish detergent) and see if that makes a difference. remember, over oiling can make it pick up dirt which might make it stiffer in the long run.

Went to the store. Bought a torx set and loosened it about 1/4 turn. Works beautifully now. Thanks.

Glad your problem was resolved. The little nub you describe on the liner is the ball detent, as long as I am imagining the right area you describe.
