I just picked up my first stihl axe and was a little disappointed in the axe head. It came with a dull edge and only one side looks sharpend and the other side looks like they started and only got about 1.5-2" of the top of the other side. I'll sharpen it up but thought for $48 it would be nicer fit and finish. image.jpg

Aren't those rebranded base-tier Helko "standard German axes"? Haven't looked at the specs but seem to recall some folks mentioning that.

Honestly not sure. The person who was working the counter said there made in Germany. Thats really all I know. The sticker on the handle said made in EU, I assume that's Europe. Anyone else have one? How do you like it?

The Euro-profile heads never really caught on in n. America but I guess with fewer and fewer people here being familiar with axes at all now maybe now these'll make some inroads. The flared toe is what never did anything for me. Too much blade for the size/weight of the head. I suppose this is all a case of what you're used to. Some of the older Euros had a semi-oval eye with the top of the eye being squared. Are they still like this?

I know their hatchet I own sure looks like the Helko one. Being that they are both made in Germany either it's the same or at the very least made in the same factory.

Commonly the flared bits are also very thin. As far as the description of the eye do you mean like a stretched-out "D" shape with the flat facing the poll? If so, it's likely that this model does. Many German patterns of axes use such an eye.

It is worth noting that there are several German axe companies that produce a piece of similar pattern, size, and quality, so while Helko is probably the most likely due to their preexisting establishment of an American market presence, it could be another manufacturer unless more concrete evidence came to light. I just can't recall if there had been anything more than conjecture regarding the actual maker.

Mostly people used small size tools for DIY projects. But if you have big size projects, then try [ SPAM] You will in love with it.

Thanks for this excellent contribution.
