I picked this up today for 3 dollars. Not the best pics but it gives you the idea. Is it generally good to rehang an old head like this even if the handle seems good?

Only if there is something wrong with the haft or the fit of the haft. If the head is tight and the rest of the haft is in good shape I would sharpen the bit, lightly sand the haft, put a coat or two of BLO on it and use it.

Thats a nice looking hewing hatchet you got there.

Thanks! It's good to know about the haft, I wasn't sure if there was a shelf life for them. I have no idea how they price things at this Habitat for Humanities store. This was $3 and it was lying next to a GTC carpenters hatch that the haft was falling out of. The GTC was $5 which seemed strange considering. I bought both of course. The blade on the Stilletto I think is even better looking in person than it looks in the picks, just a cool looking old tool.

Fantastic find...I would have bought both, too! That handle looks great, and I'll second what the others above me said. You might also consider putting some BLO on the top of the handle with the wedge to help swell it and keep it tight.

Looks great. I love Stiletto. One of the few west coast axe makers. Some of their later stuff was made by True Temper but it's still top shelf. That's in fine condition and your grind looks good.
