Over the holiday weekend I cleaned up an old 3-1/2lb Double-bit Stiletto Axe that belonged to my Grandfather (I'm 47). It appears to have been originally painted black. I plan on ordering a new haft for it from House handle to try out an octagonal that a few of you have recommended. Any historic info as to the pattern (Full Peeling?) and age would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry no before shots of it. My Brother in law "borrowed it" a couple years ago from my Mom and basically abused it. Needless to say, I reclaimed it and cleaned it up after our family bbq (this last weekend).

Beautiful axe. It's in great condition despite your brother's abuse.

I don't know much about Stiletto but there is some info on the web. Stiletto went out of business then the name was recently revived and they've started making tools again.
Historically they were one of the few major axe makers that were based on the West Coast.

I have 4 pound stiletto DB. It doesn't look so nice as yours. Mine's pitted up and the stamp is not so legible. But the steel is very good. It's as close to uniform perfect hardness as I've found in an axe.

I also have a 4 pound single bit but it's not relevant to this thread.

Square_peg, thank you for the info and link. The origin makes sense, my Grandfather Logged in Ca and Oregon during his career.

I still need to work on sharpening it up better. The edges had a few bad spots that I cleaned up.

You sure have a very nice Stiletto Double Bit. I love it when someone restores and preserves an axe with a family heritage. Nice work on it. You'll have to share pictures when you hang it.
