You haven't seen any finished knives from me since quite a while. And I'm actually feel a bit guilty as I promised Dudley (Dawkind) to finish out some bowies so he can have a look at my most recent knifemaking abilities.
But as life goes my plans were crossed by a "little" health issue. Since I was about 14 I suffered from urticaria, mainly on my scalp. but since about 2 months I grew worse and now my whole torso and head are affected.
For those of you that do not know what urticaria is, here's some info http://dermnetnz.org/reactions/urticaria.html .
In my case it means whenever I do sports, get under stress or anything else happens that raises my body temperature, I get an unbeliveable itchy rash on my whole upper body and head that lasts me for about 10-30 minutes.
The only "positive" side effect was that it got me out of the draft like a breeze. Seems they don't want my kind in the military
.
For my knifemaking this simply means that things like putting on a satin finish filing a guard or fitting a tang often triggers this PITA rash, which forces me to stop and literally "cool down". I guess you can imagine what it means for forging
.
But as I'm not the type of guy who is discouraged that easily, I keep on struggling
. My production rate might have dropped a bit but on the other hand I have more time for the non making related things in the knifemaking community. I think that in those last two month I've visited more fellow knifemakers than ever before
.
To return to the topic of this forum here are my latest efforts (I know the pics are a bit crapy, a light tent is already on my list
):
In case you shouldn't be able to see the pics, ell me and I'll try it with another host.
Some are older blades like the one in the upper right corner, as I decided to finish out some of the older ones although they don't really appeal to my current taste and design preferences.
As you can see I'm also about to finish my first folder. And as you might have guessed the damascus knife and sheath were not made by me but Burt Foster. He gave me some very helpfull tips concerning handle construction.
So when I saw this 2005 MS damascus knife for sale I contacted the owner if he would be willing to trade for some other custom knives I have in my little collection. But he seemed to like my knives more then the ones I offered him so I'm making a custom knife for him as trade object.
You can imagine that I'm quite a happy camper as the asking price was no where near the amount of money I usually get for my knives. Now I give a 120% on the trade knife
.
I'm keeping you updated as I progress with the different projects, it might take some time but now you know at least what slows me down.
Best regards,
Marcus
