It has been 16-17 years now that I have owned and used a plain old 18" Ontarion U.S. issue machete that my dad bought for less than $15.00 with a green canvas sheath.

I have used the hell of it. I have cut everything from grass to foot thick trees down with it. It is a heck of a work horse.

Pros,
1. Inexpensive.

2. Great balance.

3. Amazing power due to leverage.

4. Ability to cut brush and small trees. Works best on things like green branches about an inch thick but will cut tall grass as well as medium trees if needed.

5. length keeps hands from getting cut and bruised by thorns and branches.

Cons,
1. Length, makes it hard to pack or carry on a belt.

2. Thin blade can not be used as a pry bar or a wedge.

If used like it was meant to be used, the 18" machete is hard to beat. Don't expect it to be able to split wood like a axe or fillet a fish. No one knife can do everything but the machet does more than any other edged tool I have ever used. It is the most versatile large edged tool I have ever seen.

It is such a simple and good design that it has not and can not be improved on. This is good, it means you can actually pick up a great tool for less than $20.00 that is the equal or better than knives costing $200-300. Trust me, I have tried just about everything and the machete wins hands down.

+1 on the Ontario machete. I've owned one for about 4 years and have owned none better. Took 4 junk machetes costing double or tripple the amount I paid for this one before i found this and it will be the last one I need to buy. Overall an excellent machete.

Length can be fixed by buying one of thier awesome little 12" machetes everything you love about the 18" in a smaller package get the molded on handle and it's bomb proof. I love all 3 of my ontarios I bought one of each size.

People don't realize how good they are. What you are speaking of is the choice of blade for many of the survivalists that know what they are doing. A good 18 inch machete is an amazing tool. Ask Hossom about it.

The Ontario machetes are fantastic. They are fun to modify too.

Ontario Machetes are very nice, surprisingly so. I got mine several years back, the local Army/Navy store had machetes on sale, and I figured I'd be best to get an Ontario GI machete (since I knew nothing about machetes). They had it on sale for $9 with the plastic scabbard.

I don't use it much anymore, but it withstood a good 7 years of hard use without a hitch.

Don't expect it to be able to ....fillet a fish.

Why not?

Otherwise I can mostly agree about their usefulness, except I have found something better for my purposes in every respect. Maybe think of it as the ne plus ultra machete.

I just bought one of these the other day and I love it already.Great for firs and small pain-in-the-a** brush jobs.

I'm with you on the ontario machetes they're great value for the money. If you want a little more durable sheath go to your local fire dept and ask for a piece of 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 hose. cut to length and rivet over the end. works great and no money.

That 18" Ontario machete is an excellent tool. The 12" version is a great camp knife and/or survival tool. If you're taller and tough and clearing land, a 22" will save your back some, or at least I found it did mine when I was taller and tougher (and younger). All of them are great bargains.

I feel the same way about machetes. I have been preaching about them too.

Tramontina machetes are just as worthy. I have really used and abused them for some time now. On hard wood and jungle trees.

I'd like to get a few opinions from the experts here. Do you guys recommend getting one of these with or without the knuckle guard?

Intended uses are camping, chopping roots out in the yard, etc. I'm not taking it into battle or anything...

Get the one with the guard and use a hacksaw to cut the guard off. Like this one. People do this becouse the handle is way more comfortable and doesn't have any rivets to come loose.

I'm having problems finding the micarta handled machetes at any online dealer. At least none I've found have a matching pic, or specify micarta...
Anybody got a link, or the model # for the 12"?

Thanks for the rec on cutting off the guard. I'll try that out. Honestly I can't believe how inexpensive these are for what you get, I might just have to buy both!
