So I'm deciding between spyderco manix 2 or the spyderco stretch in zdp -189. I would have initially gone for the manix that has s30v. but I've started to question that because I heard how well zdp-189 performs. So now it's a tuff decision. Any advice?

Agreed. There's no such thing as the "perfect knife".

(But for me a PM2 comes close.)

I love the Manix 2. Love love love. Try to find one in XHP, it is an excellent steel in my experience. ZDP-189 is some amazing _____ though I prefer the ergos of the manix.

Both of those are amazing knives, can't go wrong. You'll end up getting both some time, so don't think to hard about it

They are both great knives with great ergonomics and super steels. Get whichever one looks better to you. You really can't go wrong.

Whichever one you get is going to be a great knife that will hold an edge a long, long time, but be a bitch to sharpen.

I'm still looking for that perfect knife also. Good luck to you

There's been some rumors about blade play in the manix due to the bushing being slightly too wide therefor it wouldn't be able to tighten. Any of yall have that problem?

I haven't heard of that on the manix but I wouldn't be surprised its a common issue. Probably just luck of the draw thou hopefully you will get a good one.

The Stretch for it's weight.
Do you have a definition of the "perfect knife"? just curious.

I gave up looking for the perfect knife for some time now.
I did went trough a few, from the cheap opinel to the praised spyderco military, and the beloved Buck 110, and i found what i kind of knew, that there are good knives for specific situations, but one to handle it all, ney.
You want strength, you loose slice, and the other way around, you want more tools, you loose ergonomics and blade size, you go fixed, the blade length drops compared to a folder that doesn't take as much space, and so on.
Currently i edc a case peanut, great little urban carry, complimented by some keychain/wallet tools, which are a selection from a sak classic, leatherman micra, brewzer, craftsman 4way and a P38 (both always in my wallet).
For more utility, i take a medium stockman sometimes.
For hikes and such i carry an Izula or Hest, or a Candiru if i want to go real light.
Of course, a vic farmer lives in my backpack, and i might add my leatherman rebar there just in case.
Some favorites of mine,
delica - IWB favorite, but it doesn't get carried much anymore.
vic alox soldier - great compact knife to handle quite a few jobs, rides great in a back pocket
opinel - unbeatable slicer for it's price, and the douk douk is there too, but not as comfortable to use, yet more comfortable to carry...
peanut - pocket carry, urban edc favorite
stockman pattern - hard to beat compact utility
I had a regular stretch too, but gave it away as it was too much blade for my edc, it was an outstanding slicer in the kitchen and around the house jobs.

For me a Cold Steel Recon 1 tanto in a higher quality stainless would be pretty much the perfect knife. I'll take as little as VG10 and I'd be set...

I've been on the hunt for the past 40 years and if I have learned anything it is that the perfect knife for me doesn't exist, and sometimes compromise is necessary to get close to the perfect knife.
