EF 3 tornado in the Birmingham area yesterday devastated the small bedroom community, Clay, in which I live. As of mid-day yesterday, 190 residences in Clay reported as totally destroyed, many more with moderate or worse damage. One fatality, a 16 year old girl. Great loss. Young lady had a full ride to Auburn University Vetinary Medicine school, made 30 on her ACT. Lived in my daughter-in-law's old neighborhood. Storm uprooted entire family from house, dumped all of them in their swimming pool, except for her.
Couldn't leave home yesterday. Go less than half mile in any direction and encounter demolished houses, powerlines and trees down. And here we sit in an apparently untouched subdivision. I saw one moderate
sized pine limb down a block away, nothing more. Slept through the whole thing, learned of it only when Kathy tried to go to work and couldn't leave.
Son's inlaws live about two miles away. Their house was hit. Couldn't even get in to help them yesterday, search and rescue still underway. They are alive and ok, though.
Been dodging these things for 65 years now, and this is the closest call we have ever had.
