Rooot rooo.....

I used to want one badly and still think they look a neat tool to stash in your kit.
However now I know how thick the grinds are on TOPS knives I think I'd rather just send a drawing of my own version to Stomper( JK Knives) or Bryan Breeden so they could knock one up that really cuts !

I heard that. Stomper could do up something like that right
I always carry my BK11 and really dig that knife so the hoffman kinda reminds me of my becker...a lil more expensive becker that is :p

Harpoon still is a sexy looker tho!

Stomper can make anything that you can draw or send a pic of !!!!;)

i have one of the standard Hoffman Harpoons.. i like it a lot... :) it hink it's such a cool concept/idea for a last ditch emergency... it does have a fairly thick grind to it, but honestly for a tool like this, i would rather have a thicker grind than a super thin one..

Why is that Mike ? I can see that you wouldn't want it super thin but surely a nice convexed edge would make it better for slicing and whittling while still being plenty tough eh ?

I guess if you're harpooning the edge thickness isn't such a concern, plus it can cut un a pinch.

the Harpoon is an excellent addition to a kit.. i would not rely on it as a primary knife, it would be a last ditch option for sure.. i carry other knives that are better suited for whittling and slicing and if i plan on harpooning/spearing with it, a sharp point and semi-sharp edge will do plenty fine... IMO..:)

I have one of the small ones, and you can work a pretty good edge on it. I've cleaned fish and frogs with mine and it will whittle, notch and drill decent. Anything where the point or immediate edge does the work; it is not a slicer. I'll tell you one thing though, you hit something dead square, and it is on there. A buddy and I have used it more than once as a frog gig when camping on the river. You've got to aim better than with a multi prong gig, but when you do get them good, you about have to tear the thing off of it. I also used it once to retrieve a squirrel out of a knot hole after he made it in after being shot. I attached it to a thick vine and worked it into the hole. I have two complaints about it though. It was expensive for what it is, and as much time as we spend around salt water, I wish it was stainless. I tried it out on a floundering trip, along with my regular fish gig, right after I got it, it started rusting everywhere the coating was worn off almost immediately. I also had a smaller kydex sheath made for it, the original was a monstrosity. Here it is brand new, looks a little worse for wear now:

I thought their mini harpoon was a really cool idea too.

yeah.. i really like the mini-harpoon too... i almost wish i had scored one of those instead...:o i got 2 of the regular ones, through a group by when they first came out...

The knife in CKE2s avatar looks like a great one for this role as well!

I got to handle mikes Tops version when I was in Cali. Cool knife!

It's a fun looking design but I'm just not sure what I'd use it for. :o

I like your centerfinger harpoon Mike, but I'm biased. Did you see the latest vid from David Canterbury? We are still working out the details, but it looks like I'm going to be busy.

I like the looks of it, but I don't know how well I would like to use it. Although it is a cool looking device
