Well the past couple of weeks of brisk nights have not done much to spurn plant growth. My prairie pretty much looks exactly like it did 3 weeks ago. Still very wet, albeit the night frosts are no longer happening. Still hardly any green, but lots and lots of water and tonnes of peepers peeping.
About the only colour is that in my backyard where we have some crocus's in full bloom. They don't last all that long, but is a nice welcome each year to see these flowers off our front porch.
Beta, waiting for me to get off the damn porch and get on with the walk already...
Still very wet. This is where I usually hang out in the summer when this part is all dry and you can sort of relax in the shade of the big oak and cottonwoods without a pile of undergrowth. Of course, this water is a much of the reason why the undergrowth/rasberries don't dominate here.
At least Beta likes the wet.
Following some deer trails through the muck. Saw about 4 today, but beta spooked them before I could get any shots off.
The little birch buds are now swelled up. These are edible, although they don't taste like much. Great for around kids, you pretend they are catepillars and pop them into your mouth. I wonder if these would pass for a rubber worm texas rigged?
Had with me my B. Andrews bushcrafter.
Made a coffee+hot chocolate using my twig stove. Decided I needed more practice on firesteel since I'm always using flint and steel. Plus, I like making the little firesteel match sticks for lighting my twig stove.
All and all, it was an okay day. I was hoping to see more plant life sneaking its way through the soil, but not yet. Next Friday I'm travelling to Eastern Ontario for a 3 day hike. That should be a little more fun!
