Stinger or Runt?

Hello,

I first set out to find an otf (Out the front auto) for self-defense, but I'm having second doubts. It will be an EDC so I think it's just too offensive to have in my pocket 24/7. - Opinions on this?

So I'm looking into regular autos. Looking at Pro-tech Stinger and Runt. What are you opinions on these?

I also debating on getting a Pro-Tech, a Tantilla. It would be just for the coolness factor. I think a 2" blade is might be kinda silly for self defense. Out of the ones you picked I like the Runt 2 or 3.

Is 2" blade not enough for self defense?

I mean, it's got to be long enough to stop whatever the offender is doing, but don't want to kill the offender.

For self defense, I'd rather have a karambit, but of the choices you mentioned, I like the Runt because the handle looks like it would provide more grip.

I like the handle of the RUNT more, so I have a few.

Any short blade has its limitations, but given such I have found the RUNT to be a decent knife.

Quite snappy, as are all ProTech autos.

I don't know, I've just never thought of any knife as a self defense tool. This would be my first knife of this kind.

I was looking at the Tantilla also. It just doesn't feel right having something like that in my pocket. I almost feel guilty; obviously I'm not going to do bad things with it, but the public sees otf as an very very offensive item to have.

Also illegal under the Switchblade Act of 1958 IIRC.

if you want one of these knives for the coolness factor, go for it, the tantilla looks the coolest.

if you really want a blade for self defense, get something else, maybe something a bit larger and stronger with better grip. a 2 inch blade can be fine for self defense though, as even a box cutter can do serious damage to another person, but there way better knives for sd if you ask me.

the hideaway knife for example is only 2 inches, think of how much damage it can do...

also a basic spyderco endura or delica is hard to beat as a good all around knife, and self defense blade.

The federal switchblade act is some muble-jumbo about banning shipping autos in USPS. But legality rests with each state. A lot of states allow switchblades with no restriction. In CA, the blade has to be under 2".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switchblade has all the code references. The loosest state (with people, sorry SD) is probably PA. You can own carry as long as you are old enough to own firearm- which is 18.

the kershaw mini mojo/mojito is a good assisted opener, a little larger blade that is razor sharp.

I have a leek, they are very nice. Assisted opener is basically same as automatic, but I actaully want a spring loaded auto.

Piranha mini-guard looks nice:

Closed is about 3.7".

They look cool but seem too small for a "defensive" role. I like the Ciabatta or TR-2 better but those also are fairly small. But I guess any knife is better than no knife in that situation.

Just my $0.02.
