I was wondering, why do firearms almost always have white mother of pearl grips when the blue color mother of pearl is much prettier? Is it just the species of clam or what have you that has the blue shells is so small they can't make gun grips from it?

Good question.. I've got no idea myself but I do agree that the blue mother of pearl is much better looking

Now where did you get that fancy lookin' knife!? Heh - congrats they are indeed very beautiful.

Is there any blade play? The one SOG I have, the mini-vulcan, has bad play which is getting worse. I used to have my eye on one of these as well. It sure looks nice.

Nope, no blade play at all. The ARC lock is supposed to self compensate for wear, so any knife with it shouldn't have up/down blade play. I would gripe at SOG if I encountered that. As far as side to side, if you have some removable loc tite, just clean the pivot screw and put some loc tite on there and then tighten very carefully so you don't have any drag and don't have any play. Otherwise I find most brands of knives loosen up as you use them. My new Skyline was doing that, about 20 openings and the blade would wiggle and the screw was loose. Not anymore. Patton was a little harsh on the whole pearl issue, wasn't he? :p You know Saxplayer, I might have a nice Mino paper one of these laying around as well :D

Man, I just love those Stingrays though because the blade shape is so attractive while at the same time aggressive!

Yeah I know that is what the arc-lock is meant to do (like Benchmade's axis lock) but the one on my mini-vulcan doesn't seem to be doing its job properly, and there is definite up-down play. Maybe I should send it to SOG. Btw, does your beautiful new Stingray have teflon washers, or bronze-phosphor (or whatever is used in most nice production folders that looks kind of like copper or bronze)? I was disappointed to see that my mini-vulcan has teflon, which definitely increases play. That is a very nice knife you have there, btw.

Jesseaction, I would contact Chris@SOG and let him know your problem, should be an easy fix for them. My beautiful high grade Stingray has TEFLON washers! :barf: Oh well, some of my older Benchmades have the same kind of washers I believe, my CQC-7 for one, so it wasn't a deal breaker for me, and I knew it before I bought it, my Tomcat 3.0 has them as well. You know looking at my Emerson Horseman it looks like its got them too. As long as I have a knife held together with Torx ect. where I can easily replace the washers if I need to, it doesn't worry me much at all. I would prefer bronze ones of course, but oh well.

As long as the knife works well then the materials specifics don't matter much (except to real snobs). Teflon must work fine in most cases for so many companies to use it. The only knives that I have had so far that continue to have negligible blade play are Benchmade with the axis lock and Kershaw, with their well made liner and frame locks. Interestingly I keep hearing that Striders often have play. I think it would push me over the edge to spend $300-$400 on a pocket knife and have blade play, but maybe it isn't that big a deal to some people.

Anyway, that is a beautiful looking knife you have there, and I would be a big liar to claim that I wouldn't like one in my pocket too. Thanks for the info about Chris at SOG; I think I will get in touch, because in general I love the mini-vulcan and hate to see my opinion affected so much just by one deficiency. Cheers.
