Stinking Leather?

I think I originally put this in the wrong section, so I'm trying this one instead.

To all you leather-magicians out there,

I've been messing around with dying leather, and when I'm done, the pieces all REEK of the dye I'm using. Any tips for a newbie?

Here's my current process:

1. Cut/shape the leather.
2. Dye it (using alcohol-based dye)
3. Rub in Neetsfoot.
4. Done (stinky)

What am I missing? Gummi-berry juice? Purple Rain, Purple Rain...?

Thanks for reading....

One person's "stink" is another's "mmmm....that smell of leather dye !";)

Seriously tho....I usually dye towards the end of the evening so it can dry over night...so I pop open a couple bottles of Bud Light....that seems to neutralize the "stink".....

I avoid adding oil until I've glued my seams.
Also, give the leather time to dry overnight before oiling - or you're just making it take longer for the spirit in the dye to evaporate.

I actually like the smell of the dyed leather. I use Fiebing's Professional dye. And, while it is strong right afterward, once it dries completely it doesn't take long for the smell to go away.
