Stinking up the place with my Edge Pro (pics)

So I bought some used beater knives off ebay recently to practice on. Here is my first shot at setting the bevel on beater knife #1:

So here is the problem. I started at the tip and worked my way back. By the time I finished setting the bevel, I noticed I was missing the base of the knife because I was trying to avoid scraping up the thumb stud. Even going very slowly to set the bevel in that base area so ass not to hit the thub stud, I ended up widening the bevel near the middle.

Is the answer you always have to start near the base near sensitive areas like that? PIA.

Even if I start with the base end of the knife near the thumb stud, I can't see myself being so precise that I evening wear away metal near the base as I do near the middle. No matter what, I'll wear more metal away near the middle as I try to stay away from the thumb stud.

It is essential that you mark the edge with a sharpie so that you can accurately determine where metal is being removed. This should be done over and over throughout the re-profiling process unless you are an expert on the Edge Pro.

Also, you need to learn how to utilize your camera's focus. :D

I don't see how marking the bevel with a sharpie would ensure even metal removal when I started with the sharpie and know it is moving metal throughout the knife evenly...the problem is replicating that near the thumb stub where either a) you go at a decent pace and give yourself a large margin of error as your move the EP back and forth so you don't grind the thumb stud or b) get very close to the thumb stud and remove metal at the base of the knife really well, but it takes your 3 years to do so because you have little to no margin of error w/ touching the thumb stud.

Also, I know how to focus, but this photo was taken with a blackberry, and this photo was posted on purchase because when is focus the reflection off the blade is too great and it was difficult to truly show the blade edge thickening in the middle.

You've got to take a better picture than that. Seriously, look at your pic--there are many objects in focus. The knife is pretty much the only object not in focus. Hold the Blackberry back further and retake.

Ok, posted the same topic and pic on another forum and they were able to figure it out so no worries. Basically one of hte EP's weaknesses is thumb studs. I'll deal. Thx.

Ok, I sucked it up and just took the time to go very slowly near the thumb studs. The bevel is not perfectly uniform, but not bad for my first (beater) knife. I went up to 1000 grit stone. It's a mirror polish, though not sure you can tell from the pic.

The knife above was done with a very low bevel angle, and it just takes a lot of time, to grind away that much metal, but that's the price ya pay.

We'll see how the other beater knives go.

Hrmm, they work for me and my GF can view them on her MAC. I updated the posts with links to the pics anyway.
