Stinky Brass...

I've noticed that some brass makes my hand smell funny. Not the usual morning after you go to bed with the itchy bum smelly, but the metallic smell you sometimes get from brass or bronze. Other brass pieces I have no problems with. Why is this?

Could it be one batch has more or less copper and tin or other herbs and spices in the mix?

Where does HI get their brass from? :confused:
 
It could also be cleaning residue left on the brass --
 
Why similar metal would oxidize at different rates at different times is a subject for tippy top scientists and Quality Assurance engineers.

The Indians make cheap non machining brass with higher amounts of lead & zinc than European manufactures.

All Indian cast brass is smelly if you rub it
So is most of there sheet {or is that sheeeet brass? ;) .

Dont let the FDA test it it, or your children chew on it! or eat sarnies after handling it if you get smelly finger syndrome. {Always wise if you have smelly fingers perhaps! Well spose that depends what they smell off!}

Polish it up. Clean it with alcohol or another solvent. Spray a thin coat of lacquer on it. Voila! No tarnish. No smell.

But I don't know why it smells. :(

They've figured out that sulfur is one of the principle agents in causing tarnish. I imagine that there's sulfur reacting on the surface of the brass, from sweat, etc.

Are they all polished equally and regularly?
 
The brass on my 27" Royal Banspati stinks to high heaven, or maybe low hell,;) depending on your point of view.
It stunk from the first time I opened the triangular box! The only thing done to it has been a wipe down with B-L, never been polished, hasn't needed it. But it is one of the most beautiful handled khukuris I've ever seen.:D
