1st thing I did was sand off the coating on the spine so I could use firesteel on it, I didn't take a pic of that.

Batonned(sp?) and cut a little with it, because I would feel guilty if I didn't scratch the coating at all before I stripped it.

Yesterday I decided to start stippling. I was really worried about how it would look, but I knew it would be an improvement to the grip.

I apologize for the poor picture quality

I started with an old soldering iron:

I didn't like that point so I sanded it down to help prevent over penetration.

I tried to just lightly tap the soldering iron to the scale. Didn't get many fumes, and tried to tap the surface at a 90 degree angle to the surface.

It looks better in person. Because I put such light pressure on it, I don't think I need to sand it at all.

I'll post some better pictures tomorrow, and I am going to continue this thread as I strip it and put on a patina, because I'm pretty sure I am going to do that next week.

Good job on the mod. You don't need to worry about over penetration with the pointed tip, just make sure you do quick taps and all will be well. I do mine with the fine tip because I like the sandpaper texture it gives.

For about 24hrs because the stripper has been in my garage for about 8yrs so I don't know if it will work, and I keep the temp low in my house.

Will strip and post pics later today.

Great job on the stippling. I've been a little shy to give it a try. It gives me hope. I strip with kleanstrip and can get it done in 10-15 mins. But outside temps in socal are much more forgiving.
Can't wait to see your next photos.

I really like what came out.
The stripper worked pretty well.
The majority of the knife coating came off in rubbery sheets/ strips.

If you look at the last pic of the spine you'll notice where the coating was taken off by the stripper and the coating that was taken off by a sander.
This can also be seen in the pics with the edge.

It appears to me that the stripper left a patina where the coating was on the knife and didn't do anything to the bare steel.

Is this anything out of the ordinary?

I really like the way it looks and want to leave it as is now.
