I couldnt help but notice the thread on melting old knives was closed and i wanted to share another take on this. Hope this dosent earn me an infraction but i thought it is worth a civil discussion.

maybe the op in the other thread wanted to take a damaged blade with personal significance and melt it to make something else with a unique history...sorta like the boker leo series. I know i would like to have a lanyard bead or pendant, etc. made from grandpas trench knife. Not sure if this is the intent (or if that trumps the actual blade regardless of condition) but that could be an idea. Would this be total heresy???

My guess is that since the last 2 threads on the subject were shut down its probably unwise to start a third.

I didn't see a second thread nor did i see any real discussion about the topic or the idea i mentioned. Sorry if i missed something, but i think the idea could be interesting...think spyderco WTC rescue.

That's not what he wanted to do. He wanted to know how to dispose/recycle metal which in this case happened to be sought after and collectible knives.

The idea of having a "keepsake" knife with something added to the steel isn't unheard of. The Boker example is a good one. Meteorite pieces being incorporated into knife blades comes to mind and what about ashes from a deceased loved one? That's happened.

Jason, all those are really good ideas.

I'd kill for a piece of WTC steel big enough for a small bead. I'm a paramedic and have been a private contractor in Iraq and Astan. It would have high emotional significance for me.
