Stitch Groover Recommendation

Hi All, I’m looking for some advice on stitching groovers. I just made my first leather sheath for one of my EDC models a pocket variety with a clip on the front. I immediately found out the stitching groover I got from Tandy I believe was useless. It is the type with the groover offset from the handle. I reground it a bit and it worked passably but I am looking for one that works better. Any recommendations on good guided groovers? Thanks!

I have the Pro Stitching Groover Set from Tandy and mine works good. Are you sure that you are using yours properly? Can you show us a photo of the one that you have?

I have one of these. When I got it it was entirely dull, but maybe it’s supposed to depress the leather instead of cut so should be dull? I sharpened it and using it in a pushing movement.

That does look useless, any guide that hangs off to the side, you can use it or take it off...the cutting hole is inline with the handle. Not sure where I got mine but check for one in the Osborne line

I'm not sure why they would sell that thing. I have the 88081-00 that JamesBro mentioned. It has a flat stylus that you can mark a line in leather with, or change the stylus and insert the groover bit to make your grooves with.

I’ll give one of those a shot, thanks for the advice! Maybe this one will be less frustrating on my next sheaths.

I have these two.

This one works best

I find it is a lot easier to follow the edge of the leather with it, and there are some situations where the other one just cannot be used. An example of that would be these sheaths I made for my Buck 110 and 112.

If you are pushing yours, that probably is your problem. They are designed and sharpened to be used pulling.

O.B.

Well the major problem which I realized after looking at photos of other groovers and felt a little dumb is the “hole” is what does the cutting. I assumed it worked like other gouges when I got it and sharpened the leading edge so I wasn’t using it remotely correctly. I’m going to get a replacement blade for mine and the other type of groover from Tandy to see which I prefer. Thanks again

Yeah they work pulling towards ya. Its all we use. We've got four of em set at the different widths that we use constantly. They come in two different sizes. We have one of the larger ones and three of the smaller ones. We use the larger for sheaths, holsters, scabbards etc and the smaller ones for other items, wallets, belts, coasters etc:

Ya know I've messed with the a lot more expensive ones from other companies and they haven't worked as good for me as these little cheapies from Tandy.

If only a new groover would immediately make my work look like that...I have the other Tandy type on the way and a new groover blade for the one I have.

I picked up a freehand groove cutter from Tandy and it's been awesome so far. I also have the same cheap groove cutter you have and have been using it for a few years. It's crap, but I can't bring myself to buy a nice one since it has worked well enough
