Hello Gang.
I am going to try and make a leather sheath for one
of my Game Wardens.
I used to carve and sew and was pretty good at it,20 years ago.
I havent touched leatherwork since. Can someone remind me what
thread should be used? I am in chicago
and cant believe I cant find any place that sells heavy thread
or leather hobby stuff here.
I think when I was really into it,Al Stohlman (something like that) was
the master and had many books out.
Im gonna have to find a new supplier here in the City.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Tandy/Leather Factory "Chicago Land" located in Elgin at 1041 Davis Rd. Toll free: 800 836 6853 or local 847 289 5227. I'm not familiar with where Elgin is in relation to Chicago, but that's the closest location I could find.

I like to use braided nylon fishing line (also known as "squidding" by jewelry makers). Mostly black, but it comes in green and tan.

I use this stuff exclusively with out much problem. Heavy waxed linen (can be found at Wal-Mart and/or Michaels or some such craft store) was what was recommended to me years ago by leather workers after I started with heavy carpet thread (both of which twisted, kinked and promply broke; not so with the nylon).

It takes some different techniques. If your interested, e-mail me and I'll go over it with you.

I used to use sinew back in the day, and am wondering why that doesn't seem to be used much anymore in leatherwork. Was tough as nails, as I recall, and had a nice consistency that stretched a bit, and buried itself in the leather.

I use sinue on some of my sheaths depending on the look I want. The thing that bugs me about sinue is that the filaments break the odd time and need heat sealing. I like the twist that Tandys sell, it seems to be well bonded so the twist doesn't open up. I'm a sailmaker by trade and was taught to spin my needle while hand sewing to stop the twist from opening. Not a hard thing to learn and it realy helps.

Regards

Robin

You probably were using sinew or linen thread.

The link provided is probably your best source for linen thread, if that is what you want. This thread is not waxed, so you will also need some bees wax. For sheaths, the 5-cord right hand twist is about the correct diameter.

Good luck,

+1

I use the 5 cord and the 7 cord. Every order I have placed with Campbell Bosworth has been fulfilled and shipped quickly. Since I live in Texas, I ususally recive items ordered within 3 days. :D

I'm a fan of waxed polyester Marlow brand #4 whipping twine. Gold is my personal fave but I have all their colors. I use other thread too but the Marlow is what I use most.
