I fixed my spell checker so I can now type vise....For a lot of reasons (none good) I decided to finish a project I was working on. I posted this on another site where the Idea started.

As a side note, after starting this, I was looking at the Carbide article in the Sept. 01 issue of Blade magazine and there was a write up on vise's.

One of the vises that was in it was the Versa Vise. It is no longer made but can be found on Ebay from time to time. Other makers have near copies but are in the $80.00 to $100.00 range.

They also don't have jaws that allow tapered work to be held.

This was made from a $$8.99 Harbor Freight vise and scrap.

The new Jaws are very deep, very solid and one jaw swivels to allow gripping tapered or uneven work.

The base is a scrounged industrial jig saw top and the tilt device came from the same saw. Lock up is bulletproof.

The vise rotates 160 degrees.

Peter, that's pretty slick! Nice pic, too. You will use it a lot, turning out many more great projects.

Great idea,

Coffee cups and ashtrays. looks like work in progress at my house :D

Is that a future haft you've got clamped up?

I had already melted down all the beer cans to make handles Mark.. :D

That's a piece of Bloodwood left over from canes. It was the only angled piece close at hand to show the pivoting jaw at the rear.

I also have a blade jaw that holds a flat blade by the very back to allow work on the edge and sides. The holding jaws on the blade part are spring loaded to allow one handed changing of positions.
