stock removal 5160 vs. O1

I am well aware of the wonderful properties available with a properly forged blade of 5160. Not having the access (or skill) to forge, I grind my blades of 5160 and O1 and then heat treat myself. Usually triple quench with 5160 and single quinch with O1. Followed by a triple temper at about 350 degrees with a dry ice treatment before the last temper. (Also I draw back the spine.)

I usually use the 5160 for my larger blades and O1 for the smaller. The main reason being that I can only get 5160 in 1/4" stock.

My question, should I expect better edge holding out of the O1? or the 5160?

All comments appreciated.

Tough call, but in this case to directly answer your question (which will hold a better edge), I would say the 0-1. Overall, I think the 5160 would be a better blade. The 0-1 will not withstand as much stress, nor will it have the edge durability (toughness/no chipping) of the 5160, especially since you mentioned using a multiple quench.

from experence, i hate o-1. know i know some guys would disagree, buyt the stuff is a pain to finish, the mirror finish has a very slight yellow to it, and whatever your sanding job is wrecked during heat treatment. plus it weres out belts 3times faster than 440c.
