stock removing files?

I have a few old files that I have aquired, and I have flat ground one into a double ground fighter style blade. Does this have to be heat-treated? I was under the impression that files are case hardned and that the soft core underneath would make a suitable knife blade. I have left a small amount of the cris-cross in the middle for character.

I have and still use files for some blades, but I take the temper out before I grind them and then re-treat them after I have finishe grinding. Have had good sucess with them, just make sure that you use a good brand of file, some of the cheaper one aren't so good for blades because of the soft core. Good luck and keep grinding.
