Stockman or SAK?

Hey guys, question for ya. Blade steel not withstanding (lol), which do you prefer to carry as an EDC pocket knife, a stockman, or a small, pocket-friendly SAK, let's say two layers, like a Tinker, Sportsan, Soldier, etc.

SAKs. Mainly for the saws and the thin, full flat-ground blades. I like the stockman I have, it's comfy and has good whittling blades, but they all need reprofiling.

Full size two blade trapper in my pocket, and the tools are in a tool box in my pick up truck.

As the chicken said in Chicken Run, "Are those my only two choices!?"

I carry a blue translucent Highlander on a lanyard in the inner left breast pocket of the accursed blazer I have to wear at work. (Some bonehead upper management types, NYC most likely, got the idea that security personnel would look better wearing our blazers and ties on a daily basis. ACK! Talk about a sweatsuit.) I usually carry a Queen single-blade teardrop jack or a Boker Canoe in my front pants pocket. So I'm usually carrying at least two knives. Then there's the little Subcom folder I just got that I'm trying out. <g>

If stuck with one and you want maximum utility the SAK is probably the way to go. It just isn't as much fun as the other slippies, or two or three of them. ;)

Given those choices, for everyday pocket carry, I would go with the stockman ( however I prefer the canoe pattern )......but I always have a spare SAK within reach in the car, my bicycle bag, my hikin' pack, and on the office table ( did I mention I also have a small SAK on my key ring ? ) .....so there's no wrong choice as far as I can see. Let's face it....those SAKs are so darn useful....and the thin blades can get razor sharp !
By the way...welcome to the forum !

I keep the SAK in my desk drawer and carry one of those Queen SFO 1095 Canoes in Golden Root.

........and carry one of those Queen SFO 1095 Canoes in Golden Root
...those are sweet, aren't they ? I also bought the Goldenroot (from Bill at Cumberland), and since have gone back and purchased the other three handle colors. Great slips for the price...just really impressive workmanship, I think.

Looks like my arrangement is like most others here -- stockman in my pocket (like it is now) and SAK or multitool always within reach (for me, LM Wave in the house and another in my truck). However, I do have an SAK Tinker that I EDC pretty often.

This is an interesting question for me, because just last week was giving my brothers step-son his first pocketknife for his eleventh birthday, and I was torn between a Boker stockman, or an SAK Tinker, both of which I already had on hand, new in box. I finally decided on the Tinker for the boy's first knife, since it really highlights the concept of knife-as-tool as opposed to knife-as-weapon.

I like to carry a stockman or jack pattern, but I will admit the SAK is superior for versatility and is an all around more useful tool. I like traditional style slippies for reasons other than pure utility I guess.

Good thread!

710 D2 or Queen stockman in pocket at all times. SAK in glove compartment, camper and pack.

Ahem, seems like everyone in this crowd is doing the same.
Including myself.
Why choose? I carry a SAK, and a jack-knife (often a Puma Prospector or a LeThiers) or a baby moose (often a Winchester or a Remington). :D

Everytime I left my sak home, I ended up needing a srewdriver, or a bottle opener, or something. I have to admit as much as I love my sodbusters, I always have a Victorinox tinker or soldier on me. Its surprising what you can fix if you can just get into it. But I'll always carry a soddi or one of my old stockmen as a companion to the sak.

Now if only someone would come out with a stag handle stockman with a Vic combo tool in place of the spey blade...

SAK's everywhere: hunting pack, bug-out bag, truck box, small survival kit, shaving kit and garden potting bench. I have a two blade, thin that I carry when I need to go "thin".

But, Case mini-trapper in my pocket, like my wallet, watch, and Waterman pen, standard gear.

Both. That's why we have pockets. SAK economy climber rides with the keys, Buck 303 stock is on the other side with the wallet. I tried for a long time to resolve this issue for myself. I just can't do it.

I'm conflicted on this. I now carry a yellow handle Case CV medium stockman about half the time, and a Victorinox small Tinker the other half. On Saturday I didn't carry the SAK, but wouldn't you know I ended up at a party where there was Guinness and Smithwicks, and had to look all over the place for a bottle opener. So missed another chance to show my non-knife friends how handy a SAK can be.

I EDC both- a Buck 373 and Vic Spartan. I use the Spartan a lot more than the Stockman. The Spartan has many uses other than cutting, but I love the blade choices that the stockman makes available.

Both!

NEVER leave home without both. 25 yrs with a SAK Explorer on the belt and a hollow-ground Stockman CV in the front pocket.

Different tools for different jobs. But if I had to pick only one, it would be the SAK.

Good question. My answer, as usual coming from a different angle, is almost always a trad slipjoint of some type. Nothing against SAKs at all, I love my SAKs, but I always have some type of multitool on me to take care of tool functions on a daily basis. Now if I couldn't carry a tool for some reason, and these days who knows?, I would have a SAK on me with some basic tools. One thing I've noticed about carrying a multitool everyday is that they seem to be very acceptable to carry and use in public, at least in my neck of the woods. I've gotten some "looks" when I've pulled out a full size trapper or big stockman a few times, but nobody looks twice at a multitool. Anybody else notice this?

I really like my stockman and it was one of my most carried knives. I hate to admit I've been carrying a SAK, Vic. Cadet, in it's place more offen than not.
