I am looking for a good steel trapper or stockman. I have a "surgical steel" one that that doesnt hold an edge. I like to get good carbon steel or ats 34 or equivalent. What does buck have to offer ?

Buck offers the "700" series that is a good knife
"Hi-Line" series or there is their "300" series
that are a dandy workman's line.

If you scout around you might find some of the
older camillus contract for Buck knives that are
also really good work knives.

I have the 701, nice and good general use knife, I believe the steel is Buck´s standard 420HC. This is probably better than other brands surgical steel but not like a good carbon or one of the modern super steels.

Maybe Buck will include the stockman in the new PCKS.

I personnaly would like 1095 or D2, but don´t expect to see it from Buck.

One of my EDC knives is a Buck 701. Like Don Luis said there are better steels out there, but 420HC works fine for me.

I find that the 701 is a really solid built pocket knife and I like the larger size.

The 701 is a good knife, wood handle, stockman style. Also, the 703 is a smaller version. But they stop making the 700 series in 2001. There are still some out there though. Of course they still make the 300 series, black plastic handle. They have a 301 and 303, two styles of a stockman.

As far as trappers, they made no 700 series and I own 2 styles of the 300 series trappers, but once again I belive the 300 series trappers are no longer made. I can't think of any Buck trappers that are currently made at this time.

So right now I think you are stuck with stockmans and 420HC steel.

I know buck will swap the blade on a 110 to BG-42 steel for around $30. Maybe they will do it for a Trapper or Stockman too. Just ask.
