Regarding the stockman pattern knives...

I seen them with the hammer & anvil logo, and I've also seen them with the word BUCK in the inlay logo.

Is this difference due to year of manufacture? Special editions? Place of sale?

I think the escutcheon with "BUCK" spelled out was used in the mid eighties for about three or four years from 1985 through 1988.

There are oldest shields, less old shields, recent past shields and the new blue shields. Go to the stickies above and print you out the blade tang date code charts. Stockman use only the symbols, no dots other than the recent symbol with a dot inside the C's. The crux of the matter is there is the old oblong Camillus contract knife, bolt and hammer; the BUCK shield of the late eighties (the printing rubs off pretty easy); the Buck made rounded end knife, bolt and hammer after about 1990. This applies to the stockman only. The 309 and 305 changed a short year later. "Some" of the Camillus made other 300s went on with oblong shield late into the 1990's . Now you guys that look everything up don't get on me too bad I am writing by only my balding memory.

That is the start. There are posts here in the forum that have talked about the different shields and dates of the 300 series. I am lacking in that I have not kept a post file of my own on the 300s and go thru the search effort myself every time. But a search of forum posts on stockmen 301s and 303s will likely be interesting to you. When viewing knives online relie on the date code not the shield to let you know what it is. The shield can give you a 'era' or indicator you might be interested but like all this stuff, they can fall out and be replaced. I go with the tang date stamp first, then try to back it up with shields, number of liners, etc.
