I'm still SLOWLY draggin out all my knives for photographing, and in hte course of shooting all my Stockman pattersn, I noticed that the overwhelming majority are square bolstered.

Not sure why, but I seem to prefer that over rounded ones.

Which kind do you folks prefer?

Round is sooo much nicer on the pockets, but the majority of factory stockmen seem to be made in square bolsters. I guess this is traditional?

I like the round ones much better. Jackknife, I agree, they feel nicer in the pockets, and in the hand (looks nicer too, imo).

Round for me too. I think starting out with the Uncle Henry 897 as my first stockman makes me think that this just feels right.

I'm votin' square.

To be honest, I don't mind either but I really prefer a more bevled/rounded edge to the bolsters as opposed to the square edged bolsters. Like the Schrade 8OT compared to the Case 3318.

Looking at 'em from the end, like this (||) not [||].

If any of that makes sense... :p

I like the square ones to look at and the round ones to carry in the pocket.

A couple of recent pickups are square and I really like them -

Canal Street Stockman (smaller version)
Queen Abalone Stockman D2

I like them both, but the rounds are definitely easier on the pocket. The square appear to be more robust, or could that be my imagination?

When the blades have half stops, the square end of the tang looks better tucked into a square bolster. Seems to be a nicer, concentric fit ;) !! However you gotta be an obsessive knife knut to be lookin' in the end of your knife I guess  !
Anyway, in my pocket, it's hard to beat rounded bolsters. Now I gotta go look in all my stockmans (stockmen?) and see who's got what :o !?

To tell the truth other than looks I really don't notice any difference between the round or square. If I had to choose I'd pick square.

I choose round and offer the following evidence in support:

Beautiful set LBG!

Count me in for round.

If you like the railsplitter pattern, check out this amazing old knife....

What stories it could tell! I have seen 3 blade versions, and I at one time owned a 4-blade pattern like this also marked Blish-Mize-Silliman, but this is the only 5-blade that I have ever seen in this pattern. I believe this to be a contract knife made by Utica Cutlery circa 1910's to 1920's.

Man, that's one you really wish could talk. I think a great idea for an art film would be to show the life of a vintage knife from the time it was bought new. Maybe show it at work, how it came to change hands, if it was handed down, and perhaps how it came to be on ebay to finally rest in the hands of a knife knut who took to it, restored the edges, and started carrying it. I think I better go take my medication now. ;)

I used to like skinny girls when I was square:cool: ; but now that I'm hip (or is that hippy?), I like them plump and jolly :D !
