I have made these before, they are fairly easy with a large knife, but it is kind of an odd project to do with a large knife because the large knife makes it kind of irrelevant for much of its uses. I made a fairly large one recently with a Dozier K2 which has no ability to be used for similar tasks.

It took awhile to do the cutting, chopping the stick down took awhile, it was much more efficient to use a baton, but sometimes none are available so I did the work both ways, It takes about 200 chops to cut through even a small stick about two inches thick.

The stick had to be then cut to length, which was done by carving a notch then breaking it. I then split the tip by pounding the knife in, working it well down and then pounding the rock in right after. With a heavier knife I could have twisted it to open the crack.

Ideally you need a rock tapered from back to front and slightly from top to bottom with a very rough texture to grip to the wood. This one was shaped very well for a club and throwing stick but not for an axe :

It was secured in place with strips cut from a shirt someone had disgarded.
Note the knot in the wood which prevents the split from cracking the wood. It is held very tightly in place, It took over a dozen throws of about 50 feet with no problems and can easily put huge dents in seasoned woods, and shatter thick ice readily.

It doesn't take very long either, even with a small knife it is only 15 minutes or so, it would take much longer to find a decent rock usually. I am going to get some flint off of a friend and see if I can't actually make an axe version in awhile.
