Stone base recommendations

I have one like in your second link, they work very well.

That DMT base won't accept or hold anything shorter than 8", BTW (actually ~8-3/4" or so). It's designed for the thinner DMT Duo-Sharp hones in 8" or 10" lengths (2 clamping positions), and clamps them using downward force (jaws 'hook' over the extended tabs built into the ends of the hone), as opposed to the other type, which I believe is designed to 'squeeze' the stone from the ends. If you're using a thicker conventional stone (6" x 2" x 1" or larger), I'd assume the 2nd type would be the one to choose, as the DMT base wouldn't hold those stones anyway; the clamps on that base aren't tall enough to clamp the thicker stones in position, and are limited to the 1/4" or so height needed to clamp the DMT Duo-Sharp hones.

The rubber based, screw adjustable "generic" stone holder you linked is really nice. I've used one for a while and it does exactly what it's supposed to. Recommended.

Yup! Mine (from the same online source) is called a "Steelex D1091," but looks to be the same piece of kit as the one you've linked to. Its weight + non-skid 'feet' make it more stable than might appear in photographs, especially once a stone is in place.

It's also an excellent holder for HeavyHanded's Washboard Sharpening System, should you choose to go that route at any point in the future.

The Steelex version is the first one I saw but as of right now it is not in stock and looks to be a 2-6 month wait.

Hmmmm. Im ghetto.

I just use a wet towel or a mousepad lol !

I should really look into something more useful ...
