Stone flattening

Trying to get into free hand sharpening. I've recently bought a couple of old Bear Norton silicon carbide stones that are in pretty good condition. They may need a little flattening before I use them. Has anyone use the backside of ceramic tile to flatten their sharpening stones. It would be cheap and easy if it will work. Thanks.

I haven't done that. But I don't see why it wouldn't work. I have flattened on a sidewalk and a cinder block before. Although not ideal and somewhat laughable, I was able to produce a shaving sharp edge with the results.
