I'm looking for a good sharpening stone for that I can use for my mora knife and my HB Shawnee hawk I just got, that I can use and carry with me in the bush. I was thinking like a double sided sharpening stone one side coarse and the other side finer, what do you think?

You can buy little puck shaped stones at hardware stores that work really well for that.

Grant,

I just carry a course DMT pocket stone (the one that folds) for touch up in the field. I use the sharpmaker to make them scary sharp back at home.

So what do you think about the hawk? Have you thrown it yet? I think you have a great combination there for primitive skills. If you are going to be relying on the hawk a lot, I suggest taking the head off and practice making a handle in the field. That is the great thing about a hawk, with the tapered head, you can replace it in the field versus modern axes.

It's awesome. I'm going to make a sheath with a friend of mine who does leather work. I wanna get it sharp, how sharp should it be?

The head seems to be on the handle pretty good, haven't really tried taking it off yet. I haven't thrown, I've used it a good amount for a variety of chopping tasks. I'll probably throw it today, i got it mostly for chopping, and but also so I can throw it.

Takes me a little while to respond cause internet is down so I am using the library.

This is what I carry in my pack and leave in the truck.

If I go really light and just carry my water bottle, I carry one of those EZE Lap sharpeners that are packaged like a pen. Don't get used much, more of a back up.

The head is tapered and with a little work the first time, will slide off the bottom of the handle. This is great should you break it while in the field, as you can make a handle. Also can be convienent to pack without the handle on to maximize space.
