How rough should a stone be for maximum sharpeness and ease of sharpening?
What grit is a steel usuallay at?
Whatis the grit size in a cermaic rod?
Diamond grit?
 
The lower the grit the faster it will cut, and the rougher it will leave the edge. The rougher the edge the higher the slicing ability and the lower the push cutting ability.

Steels, like butchers steels, come in various grades, they are basically files. Ceramic rods are usually very fine, diamond rods are usually 600 grit, which is a medium grit.
