Does anyone use stone power grinders to do any knife work, say profiling. I was thinking they would be pretty decent for this kind of job and should last a lot longer than belts. Thoughts?
I have one for sharpening drills and such, but for knifemaking, no. I had it before my good belt grinder and kept it.
If I had the good belt grinder first, I wouldn't have bought it.
I do have one setup with a wire wheel and a cutoff wheel - one of the handiest things I have for shortening screws - general use.
I tried it for my first knife
It's slower & has a bounce off the hard stone that sends a vibration up your hands - I hated that.
I found I could profile faster with a hacksaw and coarse file.
You can get the effect you are looking for with a hand held angle grinder for profiling.
& cheaper too.
$30 for Black n Deckers - lots of cheaper ones in pawnshops and that kind of store.
+1 for the right angle grinder. the steel i use is already hard and the right angle grinder at 11.000-12.000 rpm cuts a lot better and faster than a bench grinder.
Lmao, does this bring back memories!!!!
When I first got interested in making knives I didn't even know there was such a thing as a belt grinder. I had an old Sears cast iron table saw and I bought a new 8" grind stone and bolted it onto the saw. It worked great!!! I just raised the rock up with the table saw's wheel and clamped a board across it as a guide bar. I even ground out a 4 foot long broad sword on that thing with a fuller down the center of each side of the blade and it came out fantastic!!! Naturally the grinds were left rough since I didn't have any way to clean them up with finer grits but that sword sure turned some heads!!!!
I don't think I took a picture of it. That was back before I had a digital camera.
