Bought an S30V-G10 Leek at the Oregon show last weekend and have been putting some miles on it cutting up old boxes, whittling a hiking stick, and cutting everything I can find, including my lunch and dinner. The stone washed blade is amazing! It doesn't look used yet, and I'm wondering if I'll EVER have to sharpen it! (Of course I will!)
The only thing I don't like is the coarse texture on the handle.
It felt like I was filing away my jeans pocket when I clipped it in! I figured it wouldn't be long before I'd have to repair or replace my favorite pants:grumpy: So I took the knife apart, and rubbed the handles down with 400 grit, then 600 grit until it left just the right amount of texture. Still grippy, but now I'm not losing any cotton:D
Kershaw makes great knives, but they gotta remember, with due respect, God is in the details!! Now I love the knife!!

Yay, you just inhaled a bunch of toxic dust!

Just kidding, unless you weren't wearing a respirator

 How toxic?????????
Nope, no respirator:grumpy:

I would not call G10 dust toxic. It is more of an irritant. The tiny glass fibers produced when sanding are bad for you lungs, but not toxic.

That being said, always wear a respirator when sanding anything. Getting your lungs replaced can ruin your day! ;)

Thanks for the S30V Leek review. I'm going to have to get one soon.

Well, several days later, I'm still alive and suffering no ill effects. I still like, carry and seek out knives, so aside from a little residual madness, I'm not suffering from G10 disease.
All kidding aside, I bought a respirator, and will use, and recommend its use henceforth. Thanks for the comments and warnings!

Brought this thread to the top for Leek seekers! I know, I know; boring, boring:yawn:

waynorth,

Not boring, boring at all. S30V Leeks are not boring.

Good to meet you in Eugene btw.

You too Thomas! Nice job you got there, selling great knives!!
When are we going to see the JYD:thumbup:  :D:confused:

When I first handled my G10 Textured Leek, memories of a cat's tongue immediatly sprang to mind. I do believe it was the roughest, grippiest G10 knife I have ever handled!

I hit it with a dremel and a 120 grit sanding puff to knock the edges off, and that did the trick. If I were wearing jeans every day, I'd have likely left it rough, but ironically, the new ACU Camo Army fatigues are not ass durable as jeans. They are, infact, quite light weight. I have already put a cloth rivit in all the right hand pockets because I wore out a seam on one pair of pants with my pocket knife.

Anyway, I have one of each of the G10s, and I love 'em both. My EDC line-up is getting pretty darn complicated :-) I have the two G10 leeks, a Ritter-Mini (which has the same stonewashed finish), and the Spec Bump for when I am going afield.

The texturing on the ne G10 Leeks is pretty burly, I hadled my friends last week.

I thinhk I will stick with my polished one, the texured would be hell on khakis.

The texture on the new Leek is actually almost exactly the same on on the Strider SnG. Probably the other striders too, SnG is the only one I have though.

You'll be fine. You won't want to make a habit of being around that dust all the time though. Any time you do G10 you should wear a respirator though as the glass can cause hemorages in your lungs. If prolonged contact occurred unprotected you could literally drown in your own blood from those tiny glass particles building up in your lungs.

For that matter its a good idea to wear a resipirator around most anything that dusts up the shop with a fine powder, like linen Micarta, canvas, or paper Micarta, and woods like rosewood, purple heart, ebony as well as a whole list of others.

I posted a review of the textured G-10 S30V Leek with lots of pictures - over in the Knife Reviews & Testing section -

G-10 S30V Leek (matte version) (click on link)

I also noted:
"A small but practical point - because the G-10 is so grippy to the point of rough - I found that clipping the knife to the pocket actually pretty difficult - especially to fleece type material. This may also cause long term wear problems on the pocket(s)."

It may be grippy but get you one of the Buck Strider knives and you'll really see a knife that will tear up pants fast. Those things make the Waved knives look kind.
