Specifically I’m using a DMT Aligner clamp with bench stones. My current stones are a set of Naniwa stones and a setup consisting of a Norton Economy stone and a 4000 grit King stone. For such a setup to work the stones all have to be similar in thickness/height. In particular as the 4000 Iing stone wears, it will get thinner than the Norton combo stone, leading to the need to either shim the stone or live with the bevel angle differences. The adjustments on the clamp change the angle about 4 degrees per notch. That’s quite a bit and I won’t need that kind of step up for a while, if ever. I also think differences of 1/32” or less don’t really matter. The clamp isn’t perfectly rigid and it likely will all get blended together.
All that said, I think a setup using a combination stone is best as the thickness is essentially constant. Does this become an issue for users with thle Edge Pro or other stones that wear over time?
