I'm totally new to this, and would appreciate some guidance, please. I just purchased a Hapstone V7 sharpener. It came with three "standard grit" stones, but I have quickly learned that these are inadequate for the degree of sharpness I'm looking for. Gritomatic has a set of Aluminum Oxide stones on their site, but they are out of stock and I can't seem to locate anyone who might have these (or suitable similar stones). What I'm trying to do is to achieve the absolute best edge on my knives, which are mostly pocket and hunting types. Does anyone have any suggestions for where to buy a set of top-notch stones that will get me where I'm trying to go. Thank's in advance for any ideas!

My personal opinion, coming from a previous Edge Pro owner and a current K02 owner is this: going beyond 1k FEPA-F is enthusiast level, essentially. That is, a 1k FEPA F edge is sharp as shit.

So with that being said, I say you have one of two options:

Toyota Corolla: reliable and cheap
You get the Gritomatic SiC badboys up to 1k. They’ll work on anything. Just ask Ankerson.

The Lambo: Poltava CBN or Metallic Bonded CBN which will effortlessly cut anything, according to reports.

Actually the Venev diamonds are highly regarded too and quite reasonably priced... but constantly out of stock

just got my own V7 today also!. Already was hand sharpening with some Edgepro stones. Cheap enough for me. I'd say they're more like a Honda Accord of stones. With a 1000 grit I was able to get hair shaving sharp again.

I like the venev stones. Haven't tried the cbn yet. But check YouTube for venev diamond. Big brown bear and Micheal Christy do a bunch of videos on them.

First off what kind of steel's are you sharpening and what do you plan to sharpen in the future, for example if you are only doing Elmax right now and then you get a knife made from S110v then that's going to depend on what I can suggest because most stones that will sharpen Elmax most likely aren't to work so well on S110v without going to some sort of diamond stone or plate.

Check your profile page I'm sending you a message there.

I'm not sure if you want help or not Kenneth if you want me to try and give you some advice on sharpening stones I will,I understand that your looking at some Aluminum Oxide stones and I do not know what brand you are looking at and also what kind of steel your going to try and sharpen so I can't really advise you on anything until I get more information from you.

If you were just going to sharpen cheap kitchen knife brands such as Kitchenaid or other type brands then yes an Aluminum Oxide stones would most likely work for those knifes and also pocket knifes from 440 steel, however I would not recommend getting the Venev stones unless you plan on sharpening steels like S110v and the reason for that is very simple the abrasive is only 3mm thick so steels like Elmax M390 and S35vn I would steer you towards that would be a good Silicon Carbide stone or a Shapton Glass set of stones although they are not my first choice but many people really like them,I'm also getting a full set f some Silicon Carbide stones called Gritalons and also a full set of their Aluminum Oxide stones but I have not tried them yet as it may be another 1 or 2 before I get them.

From what I understand they are better then the Grinderman stones that are also the same stones that come with the Tsprof and also the same Silicon Carbide stones that are sold under the Gritomatic brand name but not having them yet means I have not had a chance to try them yet I hope they work on steels like Elmax S35vn and M390 because they are a very cheap stone at about 9 dollars Canadian each when the price is converted from Rubles to Canadian funds.

If you look at the link those are the Gritalons and I'll be reviewing them when I get them.
