No, not sharpening stones.
I'm talking about stone being used for handle material.
Any opinion about looks and durability of various stone handles welcome.

I assume the downside to having stone on your knife would be weight, slipperyness, difficult attachment and that most stone materials are much less resistant to abuse than modern materials such as G-10.

You pretty much covered it. Stones are usually quite hard, but also brittle - which is naturally bad news for a knife handle material. So not a promising topic... ;)
 
Looks nice, but probably not too ideal for any hard use knives. It'll crack/chip too easily. It has been fairly commonly used on 'art' knives and dress/gents knives. Lots of aftermarket mods from Santa Fe Stoneworks out there, on Spyderco/Kershaw/Buck/Case knives.
