stones

Hell, I was going to say $10.

Spyderco Sharpmaker is a darn good system. Best I've used.

not really sure how to use a waterstone

Sorry! When i hear "stones" i think waterstone. You could use sharpie on the edge to see if its removing the material at the right angle. The whole bevel should shine, if not change angle. Not a sharpmaker user though, but the sharpie trick works on every sharpening system.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oE-woRbenKQ that explains the sharpmaker pretty simply. If your new this would be good for you. Basically you pull the blade straight down. the stones do the Angle for you. If you color in the bevel of the blade (the shiny part that makes the edge) with marker, youll have a black line to follow. When you remove material by sharpening, youll see whats coming off and whats not. If all the black goes away with a swipe or two, you have the correct angle. If only the very edge is getting shiny, you need to make the angle smaller.
