Hi,

I want to stonewash my starbenza at home but how do I protect the contact areas? i.e where the washers lie and the detent ball.

Thanks,
BN

I use a short phillips head bolt with a head the same diameter as the outside of the pivot hole and a washer and lock nut on the inside so the washer protects the contact surface and detent.

Aloha,
Jon

Never tried. The washer method works great. Costs less than a buck at the hardware store. Id get a bolt that doesn't stick too far out of the other side of the lock nut (I actually grind the bolt down to just come flush with the outside of the nut) and use washers that are the same size as the one on the non-locking side of the knife on both sides. Using the larger washer on the detent side also holds the lock bar flush with the rest of the handle so you don't get a spot at the end of the lock bar that gets less stonewashed.

Masking with super glue or fingernail paint will work and you just remove it with solvent once you're done. The washer idea is good too and probably the better choice if your doing a tumbled finish. You can also just mask the whole inside of the scale with tape leaving the out side and edges exposed. Tumbling is actually quite a "soft" surface prep and is usually just done to help remove burrs, clean up witness lines and tracks from machining. :)
