Hello guys, i would like to stonewash my knifes, and im wondering if i need to have a good and expensive tumbler or i can use a small one like this:

I can also make one rotary but some guys told me the rotary tumbler make straight line one the blade..

Im finishing them up to 400grit before heat treat and i would like to put them in the tumbler after the heat treat.

Thank you guys!!
I do all mine with ceramic media and a extra large water bottle. I just use different shaking motions for 2-3 minutes and get excellent results. Now that being said......I am eventually gonna buy a large vibratory type tumbler so I can start it up and walk away. But you can get excellent results with things you have around the home.

I do the same thing.

I use an old peanut butter jar, nice wide mouth👍

The only thing I did differently is I use 4 wheels instead of his wood blocks and pvc roller In the back.

It can be as simple as a large jug with rocks from the driveway. I have found that spraying a heavy dose of Windex in there helps. Having said that, I bought the 18lb vibratory tumbler from harbor freight and use their ceramic media. Leaves an awesome finish and I can just start it up and walk away. Main reason I bought mine was to tumble titanium knife scales. Pretty sure my arms would fall off doing that!

Roughly how big volumetrically speaking is one package of the harbour freight tumbling media? Is one package enough?

I have the 18 lb tumbler from HF, and IIRC, I bought two 5lb jugs of media. You may even want to get 1 or 2 extra besides that, as the media will break down with use.

For those of y’all using the 18lb HF vibratory tumbler what is the max blade length you’ve tumbled?

I’ve tumbled knives and tomahawks that were OAL close to 14-15”. I use 3 of the ceramic media jugs from HF to make sure it’s filled high enough to cover my longer blades. Always comes out looking great!

Thank you guys!!
I like that blade profile.

I've never had much luck tumbling with anything other than real tumbling media. In my experience, rock from your driveway will leave a shiny scratched up mess. I tried a lot of stuff when I first started out and found the best results with the real thing.
