Stop pin breakage on Commander part deux...

Hey all... hoping to get some feedback on a problem I am having with my Commander.

My stop pin broke. This is under normal usage and "waving". No abnormal or extreme stress. I was just leaning into a cut (push cut) on a piece of decking material (redwood) and I heard a slight snapping sound. Stop pin broke, slightly off center.

The bad part is this is the second time this has happened to me. The other time was with a 1999 (newer style) Black-T Commander. This time it was on a 2000 satin.

EKI customer service was very helpful in the past. I sent them the broken pin for analysis and asked if they had any problems in the past. They said "Not really".

My question: Has this happened to anyone here? I can't believe that I am the only person to get stuck with two bad stop pins.

A side note: I noticed that this stop pin was starting to show surface rust. Never seen that before...

This breakage never happened to my older 98-99 Commanders. Is this due to a newer batch of stop pins? Was the pin redesigned or spec'ed for the late 99 to present Commanders?

Thanks,
Mark

Just saw the other post. I guess I am not alone.

Hope this gets a good fix. My Commander is my EDC and I don't like to think the new ones have bad pins!

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
I guess its that particular batch of Stop Pins that had problems. my Commander is a 2000 Satin Plain Edge version

Sent an email off to Emerson Knives. Next day got a reply...new stop pin in the mail. Got it today (actually two pins).

Once again, great support from EKI and Derek Russel. :D

FYI, looks like the 2000 Commanders are the ones to suspect for the bad lot of pins...

Regards,
Mark

I've had one that was loose and rattled a bit-I wonder if it not being "snug" could result in a breakage????
I just took off the scales and put some material where the little hole for the pin is drilled (perhaps just a tad too deep)
wonder if that is related at all?
cheers,

dwenselen,

On all my newer Commanders the stop pin is "loose" meaning that it is very easy to turn the pin in place or otherwise move it. This has turned out to be a good thing, as this makes it easy to replace. The looseness is not extreme. When I shake the knife, I don't hear rattling.

On a side note, the new pins I was sent as a replacement to the broken pin are rusting badly! After only one day there was noticable corrosion. Now the pin is completely covered in rust. Don't know what has changed, but I guess I'll remove the pin and wipe it down with some TufCloth...
