I am going to replace the stop pin in an older folder that I have to fix some vertical play.

I'm curious if I could use the shank of a drill bit to do this since it's already hardened but my concern is that it may be too hard for this type of application.

Do you think a drill bit shank would be too brittle?

I haven't used a drill bit shank for a stop pin but I see no reason why it won't work. The drill bit will not be too brittle. I don't think that it will be too hard either.

Thanks Barry, I thought it may be okay but wanted to be sure.

The attractive part about using a drill bit is that I can go up in almost any size increment where I can't do that with pin stock..

the unattractive part is that drill bits rust fairly easily. Get some hardened stainless dowel pins from MSC or TRAVERS TOOL. they are super hard and you wont have a rust problem Thats what ken onion uses for stop pins.

Thanks Tom.

I've thought about that as well. Luckily my father is a manufacturers rep for a large tool and die manufacturer. I have some tin coated bits waiting for me.

In this application I think the Tin coated bits will look great and they should resist rust well. I didn't want plain HSS for just the reason you mentioned.

Do you have contact infor for the companies you mentioned though?
