Stop rusting in a knife

Hi guys!

I'm totally new here =]

This is not a "how to take care of the blade" post.

I'm spending some weeks in the house of my brother and he has a knife quite old. It's starting to rust very easily and if you wash it and leave it wet you will already see the rust gathering over the blade.

I told him to throw it away, but apparently it's a gift and he wants to keep it. Problem is he cooks with it.

I already gave him a new one but he still uses the old one =]

So i want to know if i can do something to keep it from rusting. I have been reading and that's what i found: i should clean it with vinegar or lime, dry and heat it gently, so apply some vegetal oil on it, so it will be protected for some time.

Is it right?
Is there something else i can do?

Thanks for all the help and sorry for the bad english.

The main thing that needs to be done is keeping it clean and drying after you use it. A food safe oil like mineral oil will help when not in use.

He'll get plenty of Iron in his diet. If he uses it often it will most likely take care of itself.

Thanks for the reply guys!

I think there is not much i can do then, since i'm not the one who uses it, i just have to let it be.

Thanks again. Have a nice day =]
