As a kid growing up in England ' Whittling ' meant worrying, my grandad would always say " Stop whittling, things will be okay !". Today it means something entirely different to me so Grandad if you were looking down at me from heaven today, yes I was whittling but it's fine !

[Whittle~Northern English dialect (intr) to complain or worry about something continually.]

Whittling is now turning wood into a spoon for stirring the camp chili or making a trap for squirrels. Today I decided to practice the latter in order to test my Breeden Woody out~

I love the process of making traps such as this as you can constantly refine it as you go. Maybe the sides need to be more square or the notch slightly bigger, I find it quite relaxing.

The rain even stopped briefly today and the sun kinda came out~

Maisy loved the walk as always~

I walked till I found a rock suitable for the deadfall, actually it was overkill. The weight of the deafall should be 5 times the weight of your intended prey, I'm guessing this rock was close to 50 lbs so it would have to be a damn big Squirrel or rat !!!

I was really pleased with how the knife performed !

Someone asked to see a pic of my Woody alongside my Booshway so here ya go, note the post it.....when I got back from my hike I cleaned up the Woody and tested the edge on a post it, as you can see it's still plenty sharp !

Thanks for the tidbit of info. Although I never heard of whittling meaning that, it is very interesting that it meant that somewhere. Completely different meaning.

He he! That made m'giggle :)

Always good to see your traps Mr Pit sir.
I think I should make them a new years resolution.

Ta very much ;)

Ps. It's currently nithering here, good and proper!

Pit another good post. I like Bryan's o1 steel because you can beat it through a log and sharpen it back up on your blue jeans.

Thanks for making me think about my grandfather .

Hi pit -

Cool blade - and interesting tidbit about the weight of the dead fall object.

I have started to find that Ron Hood's advice about shaving the upright on a figure 4 will minimize the effort that a heavier weight will require to trigger the trap is right on. (about 3:44 on the following vid)

Thanks for the pictures!

Hi all, glad to see the sun kinda came out for ya pitdog. You did a great job carving up that trap modified figure 4. That is one of the fastest traps I think, you can really get the bait stick to be so senitive too. Love the pics of the knives together.
That is some great whittling information you gave lol.
I really love the patina that your blade has to.
