I'm afraid that Ferric Chloride will accellerate the rusting process

That steel is not cheap if the rusting causes you to lose a sale. The most expensive thing in your shop is YOU. With enough money you can buy anything....except the time back it took you to make that knife.

The matte finish gives the metal more surface that is exposed to air so it rusts more.
I have had good luck with renaissance wax and the marine tuf cloth from Sentry Solutions. This is on L-6 and 1095.

Nathan, How are ya? Ive had good luck with bead blasting and cold blue with birchwood casey super blue. It has a nice matt finish and wont rust with wax or gun oil. Bruce

Does feric chloride work on 440c??? What kind of finish does it leave, matte grey, similar to parkerizing??? THanks! Michael

Ferric Chlorid doesn't work as well on stainless steels as on tool steels. Might help tio make the solution stronger or to warm the mixture. It leaves a nice matte, grey finish like one finds on old, well used tools. I like it best on D2 where it accents the orange peel structure.

I also use it for carbon steel damascus.

Ferric Chloride works on Stainless. I used it on Devin Thomas' Stainless Damascus (AEB-L and 304) all the time, and have also used it on ATS-34 to darken the surface. I use it diluted 50/50

I use baking soda to neutalize the ferric chloride followed by a wash down with trisodium phosphate followed by anothe baking soda treatment , then one more time with the TSP. Since i started doing it that way I don't have those annoying little rust spots popping up.
