Storage and Display

When I lived in Baltimore I had a small closet in my bedroom that I could lock up and store all my knives, weapons, etc. in. It had shelves and even a hangar bar that I hung my martial arts uniforms, tactical packs, etc.

Recently I have moved into a small apartment-like duplex in Los Angeles and I have just been putting my knives on shelf in our office. Well in the past few months these knives have begun to pile up. In addition, we occasionally have guests (mostly family) and we plan to include some guests in the future with kids (both very young as well as teenage).

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to store their knives other than throwing them into a drawer or under the mattress. I've heard people mention safes, tool cases, or even display cases. Most of my knives are small folders however I have some larger throwing knives, a tomahawk and a barong sword. I'm looking for something I could ideally lock up and put away in case children will be in the house.

Any thoughts?

I picked up this Oak Tool chest just a couple of weeks ago. I'd been looking for something to store my watches & knives and their associated items. I really liked the Gerstner chests but didn't (ok, I couldn;t) spend $500-$700+ for a knife storage chest.

This one was just $150, is made of solid oak and serves my needs perfectly. While it does lock, I don't see it as a secure method of storage as it would likely draw more attention than anything else :) but again, for my needs it works very well. It's built very well considering the price, fit and finish are great.

The dealer can be seen at:

And here's some pics I just snapped.

The best display box i ever saw was one of Anders Hogstroms. He is a cabinet maker in addition to a fine knifesmith. I bought a knife for about $600 and passed on the box which was $300 or so. Beeeaaautiful work.

Depends on how many knives you have. For storage I use a roll-around mechanics tool chest -- it moves easily, and it locks. What more could you want.

For unsecure display, there's no way quite like The TomWay.

Definitely what Gollnick said!! TomWay makes some beautiful pieces for all collectibles from pens to watches to knives. However, as he mentioned, they aren't exaclty secure :)

Like my Gerstner knock-off, these nicely made wooden chests & display cases are a magnet for any would-be thief or burglar. I shouldn't even say this (so as not to jinx myself) but I just can't see our home being burglarized, but we all know it certainly IS possible. I suppose anyone's home *can* be burglarized, even if the likelihood is low.

Who else, besides benchmade, makes a padded nylon case to store 12 or so knives???

I'm not looking for a roll, but a square flat case similar to the benchmade.

I bought one for my dad 2 years ago at BLADE Atlanta, but I can't remember who the vendor was.

It's not that I dislike the Benchmade one, but the one I bought was a bit cheaper and was available in different sizes and colors.

Try bladeart.com and bladegallery.com. The following I found at bladegallery.com after a quick search. I don't own one but it lists for $38.

Look around at the other big retailer's sites (knifeart, knifecenter, etc.). They are bound to have something. I just went through my "knife-retailers" favorites list and found the above case.

Good luck.

I use pistol cases that are hard plastic. They are meant to hold about 4-8 pistols and have 2 layers of foam seperating them. I put my knives on one side and the sheaths on the other. Works well for me. :)
