for storage and just while not useing a Khukuri, how well does vaseline work? Would you use it?
Also as another product someone had said to rub gunk hand cleaner on it and let it stay, is that a good idea?

Nothing seems wrong with the Petrolatum. The gunk engine degreaser seems wrong to me. I think it might hurt horn or wood. It might do OK on metal but wouldn't surprise me if it discolored it.

oops- you said Gunk hand cleaner. That still seems strange.

I'd consider a wax base not a grease base. grease'll gunk up a scabbard, but waxes dry hard. Try one of the posishing pastes (United Cutlery makes some). they use aluminum oxides suspended in an automobile-like wax. Polishes and protects.

vaseline would work...but....blech...:barf:

Use mineral oil instead. Just as cheap/available...even in the same section at Walmart...

Auto parts aisle
polishing paste

white (tripoli or ???, finest)
red (rouge ?, coarser)
yellow-brown (? coarser)

All the auto-polishes I've used have been in a wax base.

For non-abrasive wax,
museums commonly use 'Renaissance Wax'.

Aziz?

"gunk hand cleaner ???" dunno. Seems to me that would have penetrating oils/compounds in it, almost by definition. If so, it would diminish protective coatings, not contribute to them. Maybe for handles of horn, but not blades.

You might check with some Classic Car sites...those folks make our investments in Khukuris seem insignificant. I am sure they have some storage techiniques to protect metal. Might just be a very good car wax, if you aren't fighting a particular atmosphere issue...like salt air.
