Some second hand experience with sheath storage vs a plastic case.

I loaned out my "reject" Ang Khola for a few months. I did not send the sheath with it but put it in a padded plastic case. When I got it back it was blacked and rusty. The blade was well oiled.

I loaned the "reject" out again but this time with the sheath. It came back not rusty at all. The knife was well oiled as well and loaned to the same person. I polished the rust off before the second loan.

Living in Louisiana, I've had lots of experience with rust, and I can tell you that the worst thing in the world for any kind of protective cover is plastic. I can't tell you how many firearms I've seen rusted beyond belief in just a very short amount of time. Hunters often visit from other parts of the country and store their guns in plastic or vinyl gun-cases in between hunts, and it's not uncommon for the hunters to pull the guns out after only a few days and find rust on them.
I don't use plastic to cover anything except my stack of firewood. For most things needing outdoor protection, such as my motorcycle, I use heavy, water repellent canvas. And for the things stored indoors, such as my guns and knives, I keep them in cases made of leather, wood, or canvas, for the most part.

I live on an island in South FL. No problems with rust while storing the khuks in their scabbards.

I maintain the blades with a layer of protectant. Sometimes choji oil, other times Tuf-Cloth or Tuf-Glide.

Wood and horn handles get a bit of Ren-Wax.

When I lived in Maui I stored my khuks in thier scabbards(as I do in Maine) and I had no rust problems, and it got pretty humid at times. I use silicone spray on the blades. However, I have a 5160 celtic sword and stored in the leather scabbard and it had rust wherever the blade contacted the leather.
