Is it bad to store a spring assisted knife closed? It's just a torsion bar spring assisted knife. Will it wear out the torsion bar faster if I store it closed? Thanks guys.

The universal thing about torsion bars is, they wear a lot more if frequently opened and closed. Storing it with the blade closed won't hurt it. If it did, that would be a serious quality defect, and good reason to send it back to the manufacturer. The torsion bar doesn't have much stress on it in the closed position anyway. That's why it needs an 'assist' by pushing the blade slightly open, to get it moving. Most of the tension on the torsion bar is at a point in between open & closed. What little tension is there with the blade closed, actually works to keep the blade closed (if it's working properly).

It's the same with firearm magazines.

Normal, designed load does NOT damage a spring. Cycling, loading and unloading (opening and closing), wears springs. That's why springs have an estimated life-cycle based on approximate number of cycles before failure.

As long as the spring (or in your case, torsion bar) isn't overloaded, it should have a capability to open and close up to 1 million times.

I've been storing Benchmade Assisted knives closed for the longest time. Since they came out with them. None of them have been impacted by doing to. Even if it ever breaks, any good knife company's warranty will fix it with a new spring.

Steel springs of good material do not creep over time, IOW it will not harm the knife to be stored with the spring compressed.

The device that most of us are familiar with that keeps springs under load is our automobile. The springs of the suspension, the valve springs, the springs in the oil pump, the springs in the fuel pump and in the fuel injectors are all under constant compression and they typically do not change over a period of many years.
