A question that may have come up before..Every now and then I take out my small (less than 50) collection of folding knives . Most of them are Spyderco or Benchmade. I take a small cloth wipe them off and sometimes put some oil on the blade and lock works. My question is should I keep these knives in small plastic bags? Or is it better to just leave them open in the box's?
Or does it even matter? Thanks in advance.

Cases like that are for carrying knives, not storing them.
There is no reason to store in plastic bags unless you're storing them under water!

If you do put them in plastic bags, just make sure they're completely CLEAN & DRY first, so nothing harmful (moisture/acids/salts/dirt) gets trapped inside the bag.

If your storage isn't in an environmentally-controlled space (air-conditioned, humidity-controlled), then the plastic bags might be worthwhile for non-stainless knives at least, and even for stainless if it's very humid at all. I mistakenly left a Victorinox SAK (stainless) in a toolbox in the hard-covered bed of a pickup for a couple or three years, and it rusted shut. It wasn't directly exposed to the rain or other precipitation, but the humidity did a number on it (in central Texas at the time).

If the knives are stored indoors, in an air-conditioned space, there's not much reason to worry. Plastic bags DO have the advantage of letting you handle & see what you've got, without getting dirty/oily fingerprints and other dirt & dust on them; I stored many of mine in Zip-Loc bags for years, and that's worth something.

I finally just went ahead and bought three of those Spyderco storage bags, they are very well made, provide good protection and aren't crazy expensive.

Most knives Stored in an open area that is well dehumidified will do much better than any bag, box, or alike. I always thought that because they were well protected by a tight fit the better, Not... One would be surprised how nasty knives can become even in original packaging if left long enough. A couple of these reusable descants can help greatly if one is concerned with moisture.

i keep most all my knifes in large old wooden cigar boxes, and the top lids open for display,i add some silica gel at the bottom of the boxes,i collected these cigar boxes when i was a kid, glade i never though them away !!
